Morning Break

Birds tweeting
puncture the silence,
pierce the subdued chorus
of crickets in my head
as they gather food
feed their young
barter for nectar
joyfully seed earth,
do their daily duty.

I, too, should
follow some routine,
but I have switched off
the worker ant in me
to meditate upon
my surroundings,
listen to nature speak.

But soon, the ant,
is biting and stinging,
sets fire to my feet
and I am doing chores
to birds’ cheerful songs.
