If you were Royalty
(For Edith, my first grandchild born 21.03.2012)

If you were royalty, as the first born,
you would be queen one day,
but for now you’ll be our princess,
and we, your guardian angels,
will oversee the road you take.

But first, we must let you find your way,
watch you dodge life’s potholes,
stumble over obstacles, observe you
slip and slide while scaling walls
put up to hinder your dreams.
You will witness the misery, majesty
and mysteries of this world.

We will let you become you and no one else.
Then hand you the earned scepter
when you are the queen you are meant to be
and we will beat our chests with pride.
