Caught Off Guard, and An Egg Story

Caught Off Guard
(for Babara Willoughby-Mott Dec 21- November 12, 2011)

On Friday I forgot
to put my face on.
Stunned by your death news,
instinct said there was
no need to paint it,
wear a pretty mask.

We were hoping your passing
was an ugly rumor,
a dark thought
that would flee when
the sun crawled from
beneath heavy clouds.

Today we are naked.
lost because of your lost voice,
the voice now silent.

But your measured words
in poetry and prose
will embellish our memories of you.

We will celebrate your life,
celebrate your creativity,
bear your memory
like a beautiful hat,
and not feel naked after all.

An Egg Story
(After Memorial-for Barbara Willoughby-Mott )

An egg sat among us.
Unaware of her fragility,
or so we were led to believe,
this egg steeled herself
in the philosophy of doing good,
and was as busy as an energizer bunny,
being selfless in giving, until one day
an earthquake, coming from deep within,
coming from a cosmic place,
shook and shattered her frame, her core.
We gather, put pieces of
our memories of her together,
in a place, where she will always be whole,
be beautiful in our hearts.

  1. Calm, reflective, beautiful. Also interesting how both poems approach similar subject matters by different means.
