Making Steel Spirits
(For poet Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, Liberian poet)
You dole out wisdom
in small doses,
honey easing down
an itchy throat.
Wise words soothe the shriveling
soothe the dryness that is our spirit
becoming brittle with time.
We sleep without our nightmares,
and wake again to life’s traumas,
less terrifying, more tolerable.
Your book of wisdom,
by our bedsides,
lifts life’s hardness,
softens the scars
of once piercing wounds,
and renders our spirits steel.
