Gone
the warmth, the tingle
the hammering heartbeat
she once felt when she saw him.
Gone
the hollow, helpless
sense of abandonment she felt
when he was away.
Emotion tamed over time
tapered by disappointments,
is now measured and
rationed to occasions.
She stares enviously at elderly couples
walking hand in hand.
Did he box his passion up,
store it away before she did?
They no longer know what to make of each other.
Have they come into their own?
Have they crept out of each other’s shadow?
A long partnership is an odd thing.
Love evolves into something else.
Mutual respect, independence
acceptance of each other’s short-comings
unwavering friendship
a happiness of sorts.
