On Becoming Grannny
Old enough to be a “gran”
and proud of it.
I push a pram,
wear my silver-strands
like a royal crown,
pause when passers-by
“ooh and aah,” speak the
speak
they think babies
understand.
This child will grow up,
and if I live long enough,
will walk with me, arm in
arm.
There will be no “oohs and
aahs,”
just a quiet recognition
of wrinkles, life’s
highlights
and the wisdom of studied
words,

Very touching. I think all Grandmas can identify with this poem. There is a subtle sadness in the line, "This child will grow up/, and if I live long enough" which is surprising, but realistic.
ReplyDeleteThe funny line, "ooh and aah" speak the speak/they think babies understand" is also beautiful. Love it.
Nice. I am looking forward to being a grandmother one day! And yes, it seems like it is bittersweet....Susan

And then breaks free and soars, a pretty butterfly.
How it all matches the labyrinth of life
Through which we cry, crawl and then walk:
A third generation of the friend I knew--
Althea Romeo Mark!
Enjoy, Grandma.
