Poem published in EMERGENZA CLIMATICA, Antologia di Poesia Contemporanea Internazionale, Italy, 2022

I am pleased to share that my poem, “We Do Not Live And Learn,” has been published in Emergenza Climatica, Antologia di Poesia Contemporanea Internazionale, Italy. The poems in the anthology are translated into several languages which include Italian, Greek, English, German, French, and some poems in Yoruba, Catalan, Galician, 

In the forward written by Renza Agnelli, she states that the environment has always been the subject of heated political discussions both in Europe and in other countries around the world, since the 1970s. However, despite the good intentions, the logic of profit has always prevailed, so the alarms raised by the various environmental organizations have remained mostly unheard or at least ignored so that the aforementioned organizations do not make too much noise on a social level. 

Today it has come to a head and the environmental emergency is here for all to see, even for those who do not want to listen. We ask ourselves what do the poets of the world think about the environmental theme and their response in the form of contribution on the subject arrived punctually and also in detail. Their concern for the fate of our common home, that is Mother Earth, are so many that leave no kind of doubt. In this anthological edition, we are giving space to a linguistic plurality, to ensure that everyone could express themselves at their best, therefore, reminding everyone that every language, like anything else in creation, belongs to God. The eleven languages have been grouped into sections to make them easier to read.

WE DO NOT LIVE AND LEARN

How forgiving is Magna Mater?

She carries in her heart

millenniums of disappointment in mankind.

 

Who said we are more important than the ant?

Who said we can live without rain, rivers

and trees that sustain us?

They are our brothers and sisters in nature

brought forth by our creator.

 

We destroy the air we breathe,

poison the land that feeds us,

pollute the river and the sea

that provides us with water.

 

We cast aspersions on our Maker,

the Mother of mothers and fathers.

 

We are responsible for our own demise.

We do not live and learn.

Wie verzeihend ist die Magna Mater?

Sie trägt Jahrtausende der Enttäuschung

über die Menschheit in ihrem Herzen.

 

Wer hat gesagt, dass wir wichtiger sind als die Ameise?

Wer hat gesagt, dass wir ohne Regen, Flüsse

und Bäume leben können, die uns stützen?

Sie sind unsere Brüder und Schwestern in der Natur,

gezeugt von unserem Schöpfer.

 

Wir zerstören die Luft, die wir atmen,

wir vergiften das Land, das uns ernährt,

wir verschmutzen die Flüsse und das Meer,

die uns mit Wasser versorgen.

 

Wir beschimpfen unseren Schöpfer,

die Mutter aller Mütter und Väter.

 

Wir sind für unser eigenes Ende verantwortlich.

Wir leben und lernen nicht.

¿Qué tan indulgente es la Magna Mater?

Lleva en su corazón

milenios de decepción para la humanidad.

 

¿Quién dijo que somos más importantes que la

hormiga?

¿Quién dijo que podemos vivir sin lluvia,

ríos y árboles que nos apoyen?

Son nuestros hermanos y hermanas en la naturaleza

engendrados por nuestro creador.

 

Destruimos el aire que respiramos,

envenenamos la tierra que nos alimenta,

contaminamos el río y el mar

que nos proveen de agua.

 

Lanzamos insultos a nuestro Creador,

la Madre de las madres y de los padres.

Somos responsables de nuestro propio fin.

No vivimos y no aprendemos.

Nacida en Antigua, Indias Occidentales, Althea Romeo-Mark es una educadora y escritora publicada internacionalmente que creció en las Islas Vírgenes de los EE. UU. y ha vivido y enseñado en los EE. Porta nel cuore

millenni di delusione per l'umanità.

 

Chi ha detto che siamo più importanti della formica?

Chi ha detto che possiamo vivere senza pioggia, né fiumi

né alberi che ci sostengono?

Sono i nostri fratelli e sorelle in natura

generati dal nostro creatore.

 

Distruggiamo l'aria che respiriamo,

avveleniamo la terra che ci nutre,

inquiniamo il fiume e il mare

che ci forniscono l'acqua.

 

Insultiamo il nostro Creatore,

la Madre delle madri e dei padri.

 

Siamo responsabili della nostra stessa fine.

Non viviamo né impariamo.

Born in Antigua, West Indies, Althea Romeo-Mark is an educator and writer who grew up in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. She has lived and taught in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, USA, Liberia (1976-1990), London, England (1990-1991), and Switzerland since 1991. Althea Romeo Mark is the author of two full-length poetry collections, The Nakedness of New, If Only the Dust Would Settle, (English-German), three chapbooks, Beyond Dreams: The Ritual Dancer (chapbook), Two Faces, Two Phases (chapbook), and Palaver (chapbook) and a poetry collaboration, Shu-Shu Moko Jumbi: The Silent Dancing Spirit. This anthology includes poems by Althea Romeo-Mark and prose and poetry from participants in a Black Writers’ workshop conducted at Kent State University.
