Three Poems Published in Antologia di Poesia, Universalia,
Italy, 2021
Poems in English are followed by Italian translations
I was very delighted
when the publisher of Antologia di Poesia, Univesalia wrote and asked if I could
contribute three poems to this anthology. These opportunities do not come along
very often. Why not take advantage of having someone in Italy or an Italian
speaker read my work. Though there are no
monetary rewards, these are small blessings.
After
You…
“Go away”, Old Geras,
Hebe, the youthful Goddess says,
I will not heed your call.
I am not ready to carry the burden
of your wisdom.
I am not ready to bear the pillars
of your excellence and courage
on my shoulder.
But Hebe, “we must all follow
those who came before us,”
I, Geras, the God of Old Age, will say.
“After you,” is what I said to my Mother, Father,
who came before me.
It is what they said to their parents.
“After you,” we say, “Hebe”,
pointing the way to the other world.
It is natural that those
who brought us into this world,
go first, lead the way.
We are expected to follow,
make room for those
who come after us.
The family tree between worlds
cannot be uprooted.
It goes back to the first planting,
goes back in time,
goes back before time.
So, you must follow, young Hebe.
There is no other way.

A Penguin
Takes Its Leave
Two penguins
seeking shade
in the
leafy-green brambles
watch us
watching them.
And now numbered
three
their kin are minuscule
specks
on gray distant
boulders.
In another bush
a sole black and
white seabird
lies barely
breathing.
It is the nature
of wild creatures
to die on their
own.
The last
sacrifice
a black and
white offering
to warm Mother
Earth.

The Final Crossing
There is no canoe,
no ceremonial death ship
to take body and soul
across the river of life.
No corpse is laid in a
creek
to ensure a quick return
to the arms of nature.
The vessel is not that
of our ancient ancestors.
There is a coffin and a
river of tears
and the rasps of mourning
voices
drowning in the waterfall
of song
that carry the dead to a
new life
waiting across the river.
The dead will not envy us,
will never desire to
cross back over the river.

dice il vecchio Geras12 ,
Dice:,
la giovane Dea, Ebe13
“Non ascolterò la
tua chiamata.
Non sono pronta a
portare il fardello
della tua
saggezza.
Non sono pronta a
portare sulle mie spalle
i pilastri della
tua eccellenza
e del tuo
coraggio”.
"Ma Ebe,
dobbiamo tutti seguire
coloro che sono
venuti prima di noi,
lo dico io, Geras, Dio della Vecchiaia. "
“Dopo di te, è
quello che ho detto a mia Madre,
a mio Padre, che
sono venuti prima di me.
È quello che loro hanno detto ai loro genitori”.
"Dopo di
te", diciamo, "Ebe",
indicando la via
verso l'altro mondo.
È naturale che
coloro
che ci hanno
portato in questo mondo,
vadano per primi,
facciano da guida.
No .Siamo tenuti a seguire, $
a fare spazio a
chi
verrà dopo di
L'albero
genealogico tra i mondi
non può essere
sradicato.
Torna alla prima
semina,
torna indietro nel
tempo,
risale prima del
tempo.
Quindi devi
seguirmi, giovane Ebe.

UN
PINGUINO SI CONGEDA (A Penguin Takes
It Leave) p.143
Due pinguini in
cerca d’ombra
tra i rovi frondose
ci osservano
mentre li guardiamo.
Ed ora sono in
tre,
La loro prole è un minuscolo
granello
sopra grigi massi
lontani.
In un altro
cespuglio
un unico uccello
marino bianco e nero
giace, a malapena
respira.
È nella natura
delle creature
selvagge
morire da sole.
L'ultimo
sacrificio,
un'offerta in
bianco e nero
per riscaldare la Madre
Terra.

Non c'è canoa,
né nave del
cerimoniale di morte
che trasporti
anima e corpo
attraverso il
fiume della vita.
Nessun cadavere
viene deposto in un torrente
per garantire un
rapido ritorno
tra le braccia
della natura.
La nave non è
quella dei nostri antenati
C'è una bara e un
fiume di lacrime
e le voci rauche
di lutto
che annegano nella
cascata del canto
che portano i
morti a una nuova vita
aspettando di
guadare il fiume.
I morti non ci
invidieranno,
non desidereranno
mai
guadare di nuovo
il fiume.

Born in Antigua, West Indies, Althea Romeo-Mark is an educator and internationally published writer who grew up in the US Virgin Islands and lived and taught in the USA, UK, and Liberia (West Africa). She now lives in Switzerland. Her last poetry collection, The Nakedness of New, was published in 2018. She has participated in conferences in the Caribbean and in International Poetry Festivals in Romania, Kenya, and Colombia.
